Energy Efficient Geographic DOA (EEGDOA) Routing Protocol for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

Abstract

Energy efficiency is a critical issue in ad-hoc networks for battery-powered mobile devices. We propose an Energy Efficient Geographic DOA (EEGDOA) Routing Protocol for multicast routing to improve the energy efficiency in DOA. The proposed location based routing focuses on energy related parameters so as to extend the lifetime of the network. It quickly and efficiently builds packet distribution paths by location information available and maintains the paths for forwarding paths during change in network dynamics and node movements that occur. This reduces the overhead for route searching and hence the energy which may in turn lead to network failure because some nodes will exhaust fast as they are used very frequently while some nodes may not be used most of the time. Adaptive Position Update (APU) strategy is used for geographic routing in order to dynamically adjust the frequency of position updates. The Energy efficiency of EEGDOA is better than AODV in all test scenarios on an average nearly by 15 percent while varying node density. The control overhead and average delay is also observed to be reduced by 25 to 80 percent than AODV. This shows that EEGDOA performs well compared to other protocols and proves scalable to any size of network or group.
