Abstract

In this review, we will chronicle the past, evaluate the present, and project to the future of the art and science of organic synthesis, the art of building-up organic compound from smaller entities. This science has found application in the production of organic compounds of commercial interest, in the construction of new potentially bioactive molecules derived from rational design, in the challenge to synthesis very complex natural products, in finding new methods and strategies to render this science more efficient. Nature provides a plethora of organic compounds and many of these possess interesting chemical and pharmaceutical properties, the intention of the review is to focus out the history how the natural bioactive can be converted to synthetic commercial available active drug materials. Retrosynthetic analysis is a technique for solving problems in the planning of organic syntheses. This is achieved by transforming a target molecule into simpler precursor structures without assumptions regarding starting materials. Each precursor material is examined using the same method. This procedure is repeated until simple or commercially available structures are reached.
