Abstract

Introduction

Compliance with a medication regimen is generally defined as the extent to which patients take medications as prescribed by their health care providers. Medication noncompliance is of the most challenging problems in the treatment of mental illness.

Methodology

A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted to assess medication compliance status among the psychiatric patients of 18–65 years. 500 psychiatric patients were selected by simple random sampling technique from the Psychiatry Ward of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati, Assam. Medication compliance was assessed with the help of Medication Adherence Rating scale. The obtained data were analyzed with the help of SPSS 19.0.

Results

Majority of the psychiatric patients included in the study have a psychotic diagnosis (66.6%). It was observed that majority (67%) of the respondents are non compliant to their prescribed medication. Significant correlation was observed between medication compliance status with age, sex, education and occupation of psychiatric patients. Again significant correlation was observed between medication compliance status and majority of the disease related variables. Also significant correlation was observed between medication compliance status and medication related variables like availability and affordability of medication and side effects of medication.

Conclusion

Healthcare personnel need to involve themselves in medication education and monitoring with a view to improve the medication compliance.
