Abstract

Five complete rations as mash having (t) berseem (Trifolium alexendrium; control), (2) hedge lucerne (Desmanthus virgatus), (3) sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea), (4) groundnut (Arachis hypogean) hay and (5) gliricidia (Gliricidia maculata) leaves as roughage source were fed to 20 Russian Grey Giant rabbits (4 in each group) in a 56-day growth trial. At the end of the experiment, 3 rabbits from each group were slaughtered to study the meat characteristics. The average daily gains were not significantly different among the groups. Feed efficiency was lowest (p <0.05) on ration containing hedge lucerne resulting in higher cost of feed per kg live weight gain. The dressing per cent of hot and chilled carcasses differed significantly on live weight basis but was comparable on empty body weight basis. The ratios of bone : meat and edible : non-edible organs were not significantly different among the five rations.
